What is Eating my Plants? Quick Solutions

You have labored on the yard, flower beds and garden. You have made sure you planted all of your favorites. Just when all your work is paying off, you notice holes in the leaves, or suddenly your blooms have disappeared, or your plant is gone all together. What is eating your plant and what can you do about it? 

 

Here is a quick list of the most popular and common culprits and a list of solutions or deterrents we have found to be most effective.

 

Bayer Rose and Flower Insect Killer: This convenient, ready to use spray, kills on contact and gives your plants protection against Japanese Beetle, aphids, leafminers and whiteflies for up to 30 days.

Bayer 2-in-1 Rose and Flower Care: This systemic granular insecticide (Disulfoton) works great on roses and other flowers. Not only does this product offer an insecticide, but it also promotes strong roots and blooms with a 12-18-6 fertilizer that lasts up to six weeks.

 

Borer, Bagworm, Leafminer and Tent Caterpillar Spray by Ferti-lome: This organic product is the only effective one we have found to control caterpillars and budworms. Thuricide is a bacterium, which is selectively toxic to many moths and caterpillars. There is no residual, so it may be applied up to the day of harvest on edibles. We recommend that you preventative-spray your geraniums, petunias, and hanging baskets for budworm once a month, starting in June. At the first sign of infestation, start spraying at weekly intervals, as needed, to maintain control.

Bayer Advanced Lawns Grub Control: This product only needs to be applied once a year to provide season long protection against many lawn insects and grubs, including European Crane Fly!

Deer Off: This all natural animal repellent is the most effective product to ward off deer. This organic product is people, pet and environmentally safe. Deer off forms an odor and taste barrier on plants, which repels deer, rabbits and tree squirrels. It protects plants, flowers, trees and bulbs for up to 3 months and will not wash away in rain or snow. This product is tried and true!

Isotox:  This product is extremely effective in controlling many insects,

expecially the obscure root weevil.

Rain Tough by Deadline: These brown mini-pellets blend in well with your soil and are very effective in killing slugs and snails. This product resists up to 6” of rainfall over a 14-day period and does not turn soggy in your flowerbeds and planters.

 

Sluggo: This snail and slug product is a safe, organic option if you have pets or other wildlife. It contains iron phosphate, which is a safe alternative to Metaldehyde products. It later breaks down in the soil and acts as a fertilizer.
