Blueberries (Vaccinium)It is hard to deny, Blueberries are yummy. However, they are
also known for their high antioxidant content which is thought to help
protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals and the
chronic diseases associated with the aging process.
Blueberries are also easy to grow and are beautiful additions to your
landscape. In the spring, blueberries have shiny bay-like leaves and
lily of the valley type flowers. Then in the fall, their leaves
change from green to red and gold. In the winter, when the leaves are
gone the woody stems are a striking gold and red, offering four seasons of
interest. Plus, as mentioned before, they are so yummy.
Blueberry Care
Blueberries like well-drained acidic soil, high in organic matter.
They do better in soil with a pH range of 4.5-5.2. A pH outside this range
can result in poor growth and yields. To lower pH, add elemental sulfur
into the soil several months before planting. It's a good idea to get a
soil test done first. When preparing the soil, work in peat moss or
compost and don't forget a transplant fertilizer. Mulch around the base to
keep roots cool and moist.
Blueberries require soils that drain well throughout the year, yet
hold adequate moisture. Plants cannot withstand extended periods of
flooding in winter.
Blueberries have shallow roots. Most of the roots that take up the
nutrients and water are in the upper 16 inches of the soil, and within the
drip line. Uniform and adequate moisture is required for good plant growth
and fruit formation during the summer. Drip irrigation is best, allowing
the fruit to stay dry. Plants need the equivalent of at least 1-2 inches
of rainfall per week.
Blueberries are, to a degree, self-pollinating. Growing at least
2 varieties will optimize fruit production and increase yields.
