Fall Care for Your HouseplantsBy giving your houseplants a little extra care this fall, you will see
big results for months to come. As the days become shorter and the
weather becomes cooler, there are several factors that will affect the
health of your houseplants. As the light intensity changes, change
the location of your houseplants to ensure that they receive adequate
light exposure. As you turn up the heat in your house, make sure your
plants are not placed directly over or under a vent, as warm air will
quickly dry them out.
Most indoor plants will have a change in growth habit during the fall
months. Many go into a rest period, reducing their watering
needs. Depending on the plants needs, it is still very important to
water your plants thoroughly, but not as often. While you reduce
watering, you will also need to reduce fertilizing. Green foliage
plants may be fertilized once every three months; flowering plants once
every month.
Humidity may be the most crucial part of caring for your houseplants
in the fall, yet is one of the easiest problems to correct. Place a
humidity tray under your plants, or a humidifier amongst them, to provide
consistent humidity around them. By providing a little extra care at
this time of year, you will be able to keep your houseplants looking good
and in excellent condition.
