Al's Poinsettia Care TipsWhen buying: • Try to make this your last stop of the day. Poinsettias like it warm – they do not enjoy being left in a cold car for several hours. • If you had your poinsettia sleeved at the store, be sure to remove the sleeve as soon as you get it home. Location: • Choose a home for it very carefully. Somewhere with bright, indirect light that’s away from drafts or heat is perfect. If your plant starts to lose a lot of leaves – the spot you’ve chosen is probably too dark. • Day temperatures should be between 65 and 75 degrees. Night temperatures can be cooler, but shouldn’t get colder than 55 degrees. Watering: • Water your plant thoroughly after the surface of the soil dries out – on average every 2-3 days depending on how warm your home is. Over-watering is the most common reason for poinsettia troubles. • Apply enough water so the pot is evenly moist and some drains out of the bottom of the pot. • Use fresh water only – no fertilizer is necessary. • Be sure if you’re using a pot cover or decorative container that you drain out any excess water that has dripped through the pot. Poinsettias don’t like having wet feet any more than the rest of us. Enjoy your beautiful poinsettia all season long! Feeling adventurous? Learn how to get your poinsettia to rebloom next year! |
