PansiesPansies provide large, brightly colored flowers from the fall,
continuing through winter and into early summer. Their cheery blooms
thrive in the cold weather, making the pansy one of the most popular and
recognizable annuals. Pansies can fill a winter container with blooms
all winter long. If you’re looking for a hardworking, tough,
blooming annual for the cool or cold weather, look no further than the
pansy.
During the cool and cold weather pansies will grow in full sun to
partial shade. They come in a paint box of colors, with many types of
flowers, some that are solid in color, some have “whiskers” in
a contrasting color, some have “faces” in a darker hue, and
even some pansies have ruffled edges. Al’s Garden Centers grow over
50 varieties of pansies so you’ll find the perfect color and flower
shape for every planting situation.
Pansies are perfect for planting in groups to add color to your
garden beds, or in containers for a splash of color during the bleak
winter months. Compliment your spring blooming bulbs with pansies in
contrasting or coordinating colors. From deep rich purples to bright
cheery yellow, there’s a pansy color scheme for every
season. To keep the blooms coming on your plants, deadhead the spent
flowers.
Pansies have few pests. Slugs will eat the deep green leaves of
pansies, so be sure to bait for slugs where you’ve planted
pansies. Occasionally aphids will invade a pansy; in that case a
squirt with insecticidal soap should do the trick.
Plant some pansies and enjoy their wonderful colors and delightful
flowers all winter long.
