Findley Elementary Gardens
It started last spring with paintings of poppies and grew into six
gardens that are visited constantly by families in the community both
young and old. The first grade students at Findley Elementary school,
(with the help of some caring and clever adults) turned an art project into
a fundraiser and created six theme gardens to be enjoyed by the students,
parents, and staff at the school.
Paintings of poppies by first grade aspiring artists where
photographed by artist Tanya Webb and turned into cards. Helpful
parents purchased the cards raising nearly $4,000 to fund the garden
project. Mindy Gimarelli, the lead parent volunteer coordinator on
the project said donations from local businesses, including Al’s
Garden Center, helped to build and fill the six garden beds. The six
distinct garden beds included a Butterfly Garden, a Fragrant Garden, and a
Pizza Garden.
The gardens were dedicated at a ceremony in May, and teachers already have
great ideas for the students and their garden this spring. First
graders at Findley can look forward to making fresh salsa from the garden
and getting some hands on experience with lessons in plant life
cycles. Al’s Garden Center was happy to provide flats of
flowers to the Findley Elementary First Graders to help get their garden
going.
